The Situation

VillageReach improves the capacity and reach of health systems in remote, rural low-income countries. Globally, more than 1 billion people have little or no access to healthcare and 6.3 million children die each year primarily from preventable diseases. The great majority live in low- and middle-income countries, where limited resources and infrastructure significantly impede the ability to access quality health services. VillageReach invests in innovations that address the unique needs of weak health systems with an emphasis on strengthening the “last mile” of healthcare delivery, in the rural and remote communities where healthcare is administered.

The Roadblock

In Malawi, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), health systems are not strong enough to manage the COVID-19 pandemic. As those governments implement COVID-19 response plans, they need platforms, resources, and data systems that allow them to disseminate ongoing updates promptly as new information becomes available. VillageReach and its government partners can help minimize the misinformation and rumors that contribute to the confusion and fear surrounding COVID-19 with proven mobile solutions.

Open Road's Response

ORA's support assisted VillageReach in its immediate COVID-19 response and helped the organization expand national health centers by phone in Malawi, Mozambique, and the DRC. The grant also supported a multi-stage, remote training for 100,000 health workers, educating them about the symptoms, spread, and prevention of COVID-19. Using the data collected through these platforms, VillageReach is helping these governments make quick, informed responses.
