The Situation

Access Afya is a primary healthcare social enterprise delivering affordable, effective healthcare in Kenya. Their fully digital clinics and health programs are bringing a high-tech, high-touch model for health delivery to urban slums and other underserved areas across the country. Dedicated impact funders are helping Access Afya build out its affordable and effective digitally driven healthcare model. But COVID-19 has increased the organization's costs and reduced its revenue. The pandemic fear is driving unprecedented demand for virtual care options, as patients seek remote access to the essential care they need.

The Roadblock

Access Afya recognized the urgent need to accelerate its investment in digital health management in response to COVID-19. This included changing their marketing and screening work to online risk assessments, their in-clinic management to telemedicine consultations, and ongoing care for non-acute patients to virtual coaching. They also pivoted their tech team from enabling clinic operations to building out direct-to-patient channels.

Open Road's Response

A $41,930 charitable grant from ORA enabled Access Afya to initiate a virtual care platform supporting acute care consultations, tele-triage and referral services, online coaching, and support groups for patients. They will continue to keep their network of clinics open safely through protective equipment and additional safety measures. But the move to virtual healthcare will help 40,000 people in vulnerable communities access care online, creating a more convenient and affordable habit for life.
