The Situation

Established in 2006, North Star Alliance provides quality healthcare to mobile workers—including long-distance truck drivers, sex workers, and the communities they interact with along the transit corridors in sub-Saharan Africa. North Star offers accessible health services through its Blue Box clinics. These clinics Blue Boxes offer a basic package of primary healthcare services, including care for non-communicable diseases, alongside sexual and reproductive health services. Since beginning its operations, North Star's Blue Box clinics have served more than 1.6 million people across sub-Saharan Africa.

The Roadblock

As a donor-funded organization, North Star Alliance is required to adopt traditional and sometimes paper-based monitoring and evaluation approaches. In response, North Star identified a system that gathers high-quality impact data quickly and efficiently yet corresponds with the real-world resource-constrained context in which they operate. While they were originally able to solicit funding to implement this system, funding from one of the donors hit a roadblock. As a result, North Star was required to postpone the project.

Open Road's Response

The $100,000 charitable grant from ORA enabled North Star to strengthen its data management and proficiency as intended. This will bolster the capacity of their frontline healthcare providers to collect, report, and manage data, using a lean method across their network of Blue Box clinics.
